I think this election actually will have direct impact on Americans in terms of the economy compared to past years. Maga & republicans will control executive and both chambers, giving them free rain on extending Trump tax bill and levying tariffs / waves of protectionist policies

I think you make a good point, and the market definitely reflected the same sentiment with rising yields on 30-yr Treasuries. But, those policies are limited in their scope to impact the economy compared to global shocks (war, pandemic, oil prices), as per the Princeton economists' research.

I think the biggest risk posed by a split Congress (Democrats keep Senate and Republicans keep House) is that in 2025 the U.S. Congress has to again vote on raising the debt ceiling. Republicans notoriously kept the debt ceiling negotations hostage until the White House agreed to limitations on federal spending, passing the measures needed to stop the U.S. from defaulting on its debt with just days left. Who is to say a split Congress this time around will actually be able to resolve the crisis?
